Abstract
652,313. Luminescent materials. LEITERSDORF, R., JONES, J., and DOWN, H. L. April 16, 1948, No. 10631. [Class 39 (i)] In the method of preparing a luminescent powder for coating the walls of discharge tubes which comprises the firing together of zinc and silica as major constituents, a small amount of beryllium compound as colour modifier and a minor proportion of an activator such as manganous nitrate, the said beryllium compound includes between 1 per cent and 2 per cent of a strontium or calcium compound or a mixture thereof. In the example given, 560 grams of zinc oxide are mixed with 420 grams of silica and 20 grams of mixed BeO-SrO-CaO and the whole made into a stiff paste with 250 c.cs. manganous nitrate solution and distilled water. The paste is dried at 250‹ C. and then ignited to 600‹ C. for 2 hours. Grinding in a porcelain ball-mill for 6 hours then follows and the resulting powder is heated to 1130‹Œ 5‹ C. for 3 hours. The material applied as a coating on a discharge tube gives an orangecoloured fluorescence.
