Abstract

1510429 Luminescent materials PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 25 Nov 1976 [28 Nov 1975] 49208/76 Heading C4S A fired luminescent material activated by trivalent terbium has a composition of formula (0À5-x-y)Ce 2 O 3 . x La 2 O 3 . y Tb 2 O 3 . MO. p Al 2 O 3 where M is Mg, Zn or Be or mixtures thereof, up to 25 mole per cent of Al may be replaced by Ga and/or Sc, x is 0 to 0À2, y is 0À05 to 0À25 and p is 6À2 to 25. Preferably x is 0, y is 0À15 to 0À2 and p is 10 to 15. A number of specific compositions with different amounts of Al 2 O 3 are disclosed. The compositions may be made by treating a suspension of Al 2 O 3 in a solution containing Ce, Mg and Tb and optionally Al 2 (NO 3 ) 3 , with NH 4 OH. The precipitate is heated twice in air, cooled in nitrogen and then heated again in a damp mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen. The composition may be coated on the inside of a low-pressure mercury vapour discharge tube using nitrocellulose as a binder. The compositions are said to have equal or superior luminous flux after long hours to compositions with a much lower alumina content.
