Abstract
781,127. Luminescent materials: discharge lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 25, 1955 [July 28, 1954], No. 21441/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(1). Method of producing a red luminescing material, particularly for use on a bulb surrounding a high pressure mercury vapour tube, in which a mixture of compounds of Mg, Ge and Mn, containing, per gr. atom of Ge, 2À5 to 10 gr. atoms of Mg and 0À001 to 0À05 gr. atom of Mn, is heated to a temperature between 1000‹C. and 1250‹C., is characterised in that the heating takes place in the presence of 0À001 to 0À1 gr. molecule of B 2 O 3 per gr. atom of Ge. At least one of the compounds can be an oxide, a carbonate or a nitrate. The heating of the materials is preferably carried out in an oxidising atmosphere. In a specific example 12À68 grs. of MgO, 10À46 grs. of GeO 2 and 0À25 grs. of B 2 O 3 are mixed and moistened by 10 c.cs. of a manganese nitrate solution containing 10-<SP>4</SP> gr. atom of manganese per c.c. The moist, mixture is ground with 50 c.cs. of 96 per cent alcohol in a porcelain ball mill for 15 hours and the product dried and heated to a temperature of 1200‹C. in air for 3 hours.
