728,470. Luminescent materials. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 12, 1953 [Jan. 15, 1952], No. 859/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (1). A luminescent material, particularly for a luminescent screen in a discharge tube, having a luminescence which is stable at room temperature and which has a maximum emission at a wavelength between 6000 Š and 6200 Š is constituted by a fired reaction product consisting solely of Zn, P, Si, O 2 and Mn satisfying the formula xZnO.ySiO 2 .zP 2 O 5 : pMnO, where x: y lies between 2.2: 1 and 1: 1, p : x lies between 1 : 200 and 1: 5 and z : x lies between 1: 400 and 1 : 10. The material can be prepared by heating at a temperature between 700‹ C. and 875‹ C. in a reducing atmosphere containing water vapour, a mixture of ZnO, SiO 2 , MnO, or substances such as carbonates or nitrates from which the oxides can be obtained by heating, and ammonium phosphate. In the specific example described a material having the formula 2ZnO.1SiO 2 .0.03P 2 O 5 : 0.05MnO is prepared by mixing in water 2.03 grs. of ZnO, 0.75 grs. of SiO 2 , 0.15 grs. of MnSiO 3 and 0.15 grs. of (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 . The resultant suspension is ground in a ball-mill and dried at a temperature of about 100‹ C. The dry substance is intimately mixed and heated at about 800‹ C. for about 1¢ hours in an atmosphere of steam and hydrogen. Other luminescent materials can be mixed with the material formed.
