Abstract

712,301. Luminescent materials. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. May 20, 1952 [July 11, 1951], No. 12715/52. Class 39(1) A luminescent material for producing red radiation in low pressure discharge lamps comprises a blend of a halophosphate and a magnesium fluorogermanate. Examples are described having the following proportions by weight: first example- 3500‹K halophosphate 66.0, magnesium fluorogermanate 28.3, magnesium tungstate 3.7, zinc silicate 2.0; second example-3500‹K halophosphate 86.8, magnesium fluorogermanate 9.7, magnesium tungstate 3.5; third example-2500‹K halophosphate 60.8, magnesium fluorogermanate 26.1, magnesium tungstate 1.8, zinc silicate 11.3; fourth example-2500‹K halophosphate 84.1, magnesium fluorogermanate 9.4, magnesium tungstate 3.7, zinc silicate 2.8. The general formula for the magnesium fluorogermanate used is x Mg O. y Mg F,. Ge O 2 : z Mn where x is between and including 2 and 5.99, y is between and including 1.9 and 0.01, with the sum of x and y not exceeding 6, and z is between and including 0.001 and 0.1. The preferred composition is 3.5 MgO . 0.5 MgF 2 . GeO 2 : 0.01 Mn. As an example of a 3500‹K halophosphate, the preparation of a manganese activated calcium strontium fluoro-chloro-phosphate, and as an example of a 2500‹K halophosphate, the preparation of a manganese and antimony activated calcium chloro-fluoro-phosphate are described.
