Abstract
758,940. Luminescent materials. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 6, 1954 [Dec. 4, 1953], No. 33816/53. Class 39 (1). Luminescent material, particularly for a lowpressure mercury vapour discharge lamp, comprises a calcium-cadmium silicate activated with lead and manganese and containing an atomic proportion of cadmium to (calcium and cadmium) of not more than 60 per cent, preferably between 1 and 50 per cent. The initial molecular proportions of the activators can be between 3 and 15 per cent of lead and between 1 and 15 per cent of manganese by weight, preferably 7 to 7¢ mol. per cent of lead and 3 to 15 mol. per cent of manganese. A material containing 20 per cent cadmium is prepared by firing for an hour or more at 1100-1260‹ C. a mixture of CaCO 3 , MnCO 3 , PbO, SiO 2 , CaF 2 and CdCO 3 or Cd(C 2 H 3 O 2 ) 2 .3H 2 O, cooling, grinding, adding CaCl 2 and re-firing. The calciumcadmium silicate is stated to be in the # form. The luminescent material can be mixed with calcium halo-phosphate, magnesium tungstate or zinc silicate to supply red light deficiency. According to the Provisional Specification the atomic ratio of cadmium to calcium can be between 5 : 95 and 50: 50 and the proportion of manganese may be 1-40 per cent of lead, preferably 10 per cent.
