Abstract
672,172. Luminescent materials. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 3, 1950 [April 6, 1950], No. 19417/50. Class 39 (i). A red luminescent material excitable by cathode or ultra-violet rays comprises a fired reaction product containing magnesium, arsenic, and oxygen activated by manganese in which the gram molecule ratio between MgO and As 2 O 5 exceeds 3: 1. Several manufacturing methods are described utilizing in common 365 gms. MgO, 230 gms. As 2 O 5 and 2.3 gms. MnCO 3 ground in a ball mill with distilled water; evaporated to dryness; fired at 600 C. for one hour in air or oxygen, and then for a further period at 1100‹ C. Magnesium fluoride may be used as a flux. The light emitted is substantially the same colour as that from known magnesium germanates with a higher conversion efficiency, when excited by ultraviolet (e.g. mercury lines 2537 Š and 3650 Š). The material may be used in low-pressure mercury vapour discharge tubes, colour television, shop window display and theatre decors.
