Abstract
734,426. Luminescent material. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., HUNT, B.. E., and McKEAG, A. H. Oct. 8, 1953 [Oct. 31, 1952], No. 27477/52. Class 39 (1). In a barium-strontium disilicate activated by lead the molecular ratio of silica to other oxides is in the range 2: 1 to 3: 1 (e.g. 2.2) and the molecular ratio of strontia to baria is not greater than 20: 80 (e.g. 5: 95). The lead forms 0.1 to 10 per cent (e.g. 2.6 per cent) of the total material calculated as oxides, and activates the material to emit long-wave ultraviolet light when excited by light of 2537 A wavelength or electrons at 10,000 volts. Fluxes of alkaline earth halides may be used. In an example the starting materials are milled for 2 hours with about 4 per cent of a first flux of barium fluoride, fired in air for 3 hours, cooled, milled with 5 per cent of a second flux of hydrated barium chloride for ¢ hour, refired for 2 hours, cooled, milled for 1 hour, and refired for 2 hours, all firings being at 1050-1150‹ C. The material may be used as the first layer of a double-layer cathode-ray tube screen. The Provisional Specification describes the preparation of materials emitting blue light.
