Abstract
544,763. Luminescent materials. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 11, 1941, No. 3284. Convention date, March 14, 1940. [Class 39 (i)] A fluorescent coating on an electric discharge device is obtained by (i) mixing with the fluorescent material a small amount of boric acid, ¢ to 15 per cent of the phosphor ; (ii) making a suspension in a binder such as nitrocellulose dissolved in amyl acetate (iii) coating the envelope with this suspension and then firing at about 600-700‹ C. to fuse the boric acid. The particle size of the phosphor may be from 1-50 microns. The coating may be used in lamps as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,182,723 having an argon and mercury filling, the argon at 4 mm. and the mercury at a pressure of 12 microns. The phosphor may be zinc-beryllium silicate, zinc silicate, magnesium tungstate or a daylight mixture of zinc beryllium silicate, magnesium tungstate and cadmium borate. In another method of attaching the coating a binder consisting of boric acid in glycerine is laid thinly on the envelope which is fired at 600‹ C. ; on to this a conventional suspension is poured, dried and then fired at 475‹ C.
