Abstract

528,552. Luminescent materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., JENKINS, H. G., and McKEAG, A. H. May 9, 1939, No. 13858. [Class 39 (i)] Luminescent material, which may be incorporated in a lamp, consists of or contains a substantial proportion of a luminescent tungstate mixed with a solid oxide of a different base to prevent blackening in manufacture or use. The luminescent tungstates mentioned are those of calcium, magnesium, zinc, cadmium and magnesium-cadmium, which may be suitably activated. The oxides used (a) must be a metallic oxide which is not acidic in the presence of moisture (b) must not be unstable in air, such as the alkaline oxides except lithium oxide and (c) must not be highly coloured. Suitable bases for the oxide mentioned are calcium, strontium, barium, magnesium, beryllium, zinc, cerium, thorium and tin. For the purposes of the invention zinc and magnesium are regarded as the same. The oxide is added in the proportion of 1-20 per cent, and preferably about 5 per cent of the weight of tungstate, and may be incorporated therewith either during the process of making the tungstate, or it may be added to tungstate already made, in which case the mixture is heated below its reaction temperature to cause the intimate association of the ingredients.
