Abstract

Spark-plug insulators of good heat conductivity are made by shaping a silica-free mix comprising finely ground alumina and one or more of the oxides of calcium, strontium, barium, zinc or cadmium and firing at a temperature corresponding to Orton cone 30-35. The oxides of calcium, strontium and barium may be replaced by the corresponding carbonates, particularly when the mixture is moulded with the aid of water. It is stated that the product consists of a mixture of corundum and the corresponding aluminate. Preferably, 3-10 per cent of the oxide are added to the alumina; in addition fluxes and the oxides of cerium and tantalum as described in Specification 484,315 may be added to the mix. The mix may be moulded with the aid of temporary binders such as a synthetic resin or with hydrochloric acid. In an example, alumina, precalcined at 1200 DEG C., is ground until the major portion comprises particles of an average size of 5m , the ground alumina is mixed with barium carbonate, a small quantity of a synthetic resin of the phenolic condensation type and water, and then granulated; the granules are particularly dried, moulded into the desired shape under heat and pressure, and the articles finally fired.
