Abstract
In making an electrical insulator of a ceramic nature from a magnesium silicate mass comprising from about 70 to 90 per cent soapstone or talc and an alkaline-earth flux, the flux is one or more of the oxides or oxide-yielding compounds of beryllium, calcium, strontium or barium, alumina as such being excluded from the mass, while clay, if employed at all, is present in an amount less than that of the flux. The product after firing is a densely-sintered and substantially glass-free structure of well-formed large crystals with a comparatively low dielectric loss. Preferably, the clay amounts to less than 40 per cent of the amount of the flux. An example of a suitable mass is: 83 soapstone or talc, 9 barium carbonate, 4,5 calcium carbonate, 3,5 clay-like material. Three other examples are given. Specifications 347,486 and 367,114 are referred to.
