Abstract

489,150. Magazines for automatic firearms. RHEINMETALL-BORSIG AKT.-GES. Jan. 4, 1938, No. 212. Convention date, Jan. 4, 1937. [Class 119] A magazine 2 for an automatic firearm is disposed laterally of the gun, the magazine being opened by swinging the upper wall 3 of the magazine in its own plane about a pivot 13, this action resulting in the retraction of the magazine follower 4 and the compression of the magazine spring 5. The upper wall 3 extends downwardly at one side to enclose a gap 2a in the lower wall of the magazine through which empty cartridge clips may fall when the magazine is open. The follower 4 has a block 4a guided in a channel 2b, the block having a notch so that the follower may be held in retracted position by a pawl 18 which is released by a cam surface 3b on the wall 3 when the latter is moved to close the magazine. A spring spool 4b in the follower carries a chain 6 which can flex only in one plane, the chain passing over a sprocket 7 and being coupled to the wall 3. An extensible spring plunger 15b maintains the wall 3 either in the fully closed or the fully open position. A spring-pressed latch 11 locks the wall 3 in closed position. A lever 19, pivoted at 13 has a slot 19a in which a pin 3c carried by the wall 3 engages the opening of the magazine thereby rocking the lever 19 and actuating a member 20 to release the cartridge clip, which, if empty, can then fall through the opening 2a.
