(CI. 4250) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A firearm has a magazine and a clip which is removably carried by a support element pivotally mounted for vertical swinging movement on and relative to the underside of the receiver forward of the trigger. A finger piece is provided for releasably maintaining the support element in closed position with the clip in the magazine.

The present invention relates to a firearm the lower wall of the receiver of which is formed, forwardly of the trigger, with a loading orifice in which is disposed a charger or cartridge clip from which the cartridges pass successively into the front part of the bolt cover and then into the breech or cartridge chamber.

More specifically, it is the object of the invention to provide a firearm of the above-mentioned type wherein it is possible to proceed to the displacement of the charger so as to put it into a readily accessible position, either for the purpose of filling it or for replacing it by a further charger, whilst effecting merely a few rapid manipulations which do not involve any kind of difiiculty.

According to one feature, a firearm according to the invention is provided, under the magazine, with an element for supporting a charger, which said element is mounted for rocking relatively to the front part of the bolt cover and is maintained in the position turned-down on the latter by a manually actuable retaining element.

According to a further feature, the charger-supporting element is provided, at one end, with a rocking pivot and at the other end with a pin with which co-operates the retaining element which advantageously consists of a sliding latch subjected to the permanent influence of a spring.

Furthermore, near the rocking pivot, the support element has a lug on which acts a spring, for example a hair-pin spring, bearing on the lower wall of the trigger guard; when the pin on the support element is freed, the latter, under the action of the spring, rocks into the open position until a tongue which it carries abuts against a shoulder on the said front part of the bolt cover.

Furthermore, according to a special embodiment, the support element preferably has the form of a shallow housing formed at one end with a recess in which one nose of the charger is disposed and having at the opposite end an engagement spring co-operating with a projection provided on the charger.

The figures show only those elements which are necessary for understanding the invention and the others have been purposely omitted; furthermore, in the following description no explanation will be given of the mode of functioning of the firearm, which is known and which is unnecessary for understanding the invention.

3,399,476 Patented July 2, 1968 The firearm shown in the figures and the essential structure of which is known comprises the front part of the receiver or bolt cover 1 on which is mounted a barrel 2; formed in the said front part of the bolt cover, which has a solid upper wall In, is a magazine or cavity 3; the bolt 4 is displaced in the front part of the bolt cover 1. Formed in the lower wall of the front part of the bolt cover, forwardly of the trigger guard 6, is a loading aperture 1th through which the cartridges from a clip or charger 5 pass successively into the cavity 3 and from there into the breech 2a. The charger 5 is carried in removable manner by a support element 7 having the shape of a shallow housing; forwardly, the charger 5 has, near its base, a nose lodged in a recess 70 in the support element 7 and, rearwardly, it has a projection 5b with which co-operates an engaging spring 13 secured on the rear wall of the housing. The said support element 7 is prolonged forwardly by a lug 7a; formed in which is an eyelet 7d through which extends a pivot 8 transversely secured in the trigger guard 9, which is of course a portion of the receiver as a whole. A hairpin spring 10 carried on the pivot 8 bears, on one side, on the lug 7a and On the other side on the trigger guard; the lug 7a has a tongue 7b which abuts against the shoulder 9a on the trigger guard 9, thus arresting the pivoting of the support element, as shown in FIGURE 2.

The rear wall of the housing constituting the support element 7 is provided with a pin 11 which is lodged in a notch 12:: formed in a sliding latch 12 permanently subjected to the influence of a thrust spring 12b; the latch is thus constantly urged forwardly so as to occupy the locking position. When, against the action of the spring 1222, the latch 12 is manually withdrawn towards the rear, towards the trig er guard 6, the pin 11 is freed and the spring 10 acting on the lug 7a rocks the support element 7 from the turned-down position shown in FIG- URE 1 into the rocked position shown in FIGURE 2; in this manner, the charger 5 is disengaged from the firearm and occupies a position wherein it can readily be reloaded or replaced after having withdrawn the support element, compressing meanwhile the engagement spring 13.

After having, if appropriate, re-loaded or replaced the charger 5, the support element 7 is restored to its position, turning it down on the firearm.

A firearm provided with a rocking device such as that just described has the advantage that the charger may be put into a position wherein it is readily accessible whilst remaining (if appropriate) fast with the firearm, thus facilitating and accelerating loading manipulations.

It is self-evident that the embodiment discussed hereinabove constitutes only one example of embodiment and that it would be possible, without exceeding the scope of the invention, to make many modifications; thus, the support element could have a rear pivot or be retained by an element other than the latch described.

What I claim is:

1. In a firearm having a receiver and a magazine in the receiver and an elongated cartridge clip removably disposable in the magazine and having projections on the lower portions of each end thereof; the improvement comprising a support element in the form of a shallow upwardly opening receptacle for the clip pivotally mounted on the receiver for vertical swinging movement between a closed position in which the support element closes the magazine and positions the clip in the magazine and an open position in which the clip is exposed for removal and replacement, means removably mounting the clip on the support element, and comprising a recess in said support element for receiving said projection at one end of the clip and resilient member in said support element to snap behind the said projection at the other end of the clip, and means releasabiy retaining the support element in said closed position.

A firearm as claimed in claim 1. said support element having a shoulder thereon closely adjacent the axis of pivotal movement of the support element on :he receiver, the receiver having a forwardly facing mutment surface on which said shoulder bears in said open position when said support element extends substantially perpendicular to the receiver thereby to limit the swinging movement of said support element in said open position.

3. A firearm as claimed in claim 1. said shallow upwardly opening receptacle having an interior corner in which said recess is disposed.
