The present invention is a division of the patent application Serial Number 375,166 filed January 21, 1941, and relates to automatic guns of the kind having a transversely sliding breech block.
The object of the invention is to provide such guns with a simple and reliable primary extractor which positively releases the cartridge case from the barrel chamber, to facilitate the removal of the cartridge case byga secondary extractor, and allows a new cartridge to be easily inserted into the barrel chamber.
According to the invention the primary extractor comprises a cartridge case releasing memher the actuating means of which consists of a beam journalled for rocking movement in the barrel, one end of the beam lying in the path of the breech block and the other carrying a pawl which engages the releasing member and impartsoperative movement to it but slips out of engagement with the releasing member and tilts down leaving the member free for return movement during further 'opening operation of the breech block.
The accompanying drawing shows an example of the invention for rim-cartridges.
Figure 1 shows the primary extractor in normal position, in a longitudinal section through the relevant part of the gun,
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the primary extractor in working position during the first part of the opening movement of the breech block, and
Figure 3 is a view showing the primary extractor in working position during the last part of the opening movement of the breech block.
The barrel I has in its rear part a suitable slot in for the transversely sliding breech block 2. A firing pin 3 is housed in the breech block 2 and as described in the specification of the concurrent application Ser. No. 375,166, filed January 21, 1941, the latter is provided with studs or projections 4 engaging and co-operating with guiding grooves 5 arranged in the breech block carrier 6 and serving to impart vertical opening or closing movement to the breech block 2 upon recoil or return movement of the carrier 6 respectively. A secondary cartridge extractor 8, provided with a hook I is mounted on the carrier 6.
The firing pin 3 may have its operative fore end of a rectangular cross section and has to be secured against falling out and incidental rotation. For this purpose the firing pin 3 has its rear part flattened and is held in position by a securing plate 9 mounted slidably in guiding rooves l0 provided in the breech block 2. The securing plate 9 is fixed in its position by a plunger ll biassed by a spring I2. In this position the upper end of the securing plate 9 lies against the flattened part of the firing pin 3, securing the latter both against falling out and incidental rotation.
A releasing fork l4 embracing the bottom or rim portion of the cartridge i3 is mounted for pivotal movement in the barrel I.
A beam 15 is journalled in the barrel I; one end of it lies in the path of the breech block 2 and the other carries a pawl it which may engage the lower end of the releasing fork M. A spring ll serves to press the pawl it into working position and another spring I8 serves to return the fork I4 into initial position. Figure 1 shows the extractor in normal position.
Upon downward movement of the breech block 2, see Figure 2, the latter engages the beam l5 and swings it in the direction of the arrow A. The pawl l6 swings thereby the releasing fork l4 so as to release the cartridge case from the barrel. Upon further movement of the breech block downward the pawl l6 slides along the lower face of the fork l4 until it passes over the edge I9 of a recess or slot 20 in the lower arm of the releasing fork l4, whereupon it swings out in clockwise direction as shown in Figure 3 and releases the fork M for return movement under infiuence of its spring l8. A new cartridge may be then introduced into the chamber when the breech block is in its low position.
An abutment or projection 2| is provided on the beam l5 co-operating with a wall or projection 22 or the like on the breech block 2 in order to swing back the beam it as the breech block 2 rises.
I claim:
1. An automatic gun comprising a gun barrel having a chamber to hold a cartridge, a breech block movable in said gun barrel in a plane inclined at right angles to the axis of said barrel, a lever pivotally mounted in said barrel for releasing a cartridge inserted in said barrel chamber comprising a fork-like portion adapted to embrace parts of the cartridge in said barrel chamber and a second portion having a guiding surface and a guiding slot, a spring acting on the second portion of said lever to move said lever to a normal inoperative position, a two-arm beam journalled for rocking movements in said barrel and extending with one of its arms in the path of said breech block to be actuated by said breech block, a swingable pawl carried by the second arm of said beam and adapted to slide on the guiding surface of said releasing lever to impart cartridge releasing movement thereto during actuation of said beam by said breech block and said pawl constructed and arranged to slip free of said releasing lever through its guiding slot to leave the releasing lever free to return to normal position during the further opening of the breech block.
2. An automatic gun comprising a gun barrel having'a chamber to hold a cartridge, a breech block mounted for breech opening movement to a lower position in said gun barrel in a plane inclined at right angles to the axis of said barrel,
a lever pivotally mounted in said barrel for releasing a cartridge inserted in said barrel chamber comprising a fork-like portion adapted to embrace parts of the cartridge in said barrel chamber and a second portion having a guiding surface and a guiding slot, a spring acting on the second portion of said lever to move said lever to a normal inoperative position, a two-arm beam journalled for rocking movements in said barrel extending with one of its arms in the path of said breech block and to be actuated by said breech block, a swingable pawl carried by the second arm of said beam and adapted to slide on t e guiding surface of said releasing lever to imp t cartridge releasing movement thereto during a tuation of said beam in one direction by sa d breech block in moving to a lower position and said pawl constructed and arranged to slip free of said releasing lever through its guiding slot to leave the releasing lever free to return to normal position during the further opening of the breech block, a projection on said beam, and a projection on said breech block adapted to swing back said beam as the breech block rises.
