Abstract

486,768. Supply systems for discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. (Patent-Treuhand-Ges. f³r Elektrische Gliihlampen) Dec. 4, 1936, Nos. 33318/36 and 26800/37. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] A high-pressure discharge lamp (i.e. operating at a pressure of at least 10 atmospheres) is provided with three or more electrodes, no two of which are more than 6 cms. apart, so arranged that no two electrodes are separated by a distance greater than that between the most widely separated pair of co-operating electrodes, each pair of cooperating electrodes being in circuit with a separate stabilizing impedance. Two electrodes directly connected without an intervening impedance are counted as a single electrode, and starting electrodes, such as those described in Specification. 472,658, [Group XL], are not reckoned. All the electrodes may be fed from the same source, or different pairs from separate sources, or from' separate secondaries of a single transformer. The Figure shows an example of the last arrangement, the secondaries 17, 18, 19 of the transformer 16 being connected to the terminals 15, 14, 12, 15, and 13, 12 respectively, through the impedances shown. An arrangement of six terminals fed from the phases of a threephase system is also shown. The arrangement may be such that the supplies to the different pairs of terminals are in phase, or the supply to one pair of terminals may be 90‹ out of phase with the supply to a separate pair of terminals. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 476,818.
