[Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] A high-pressure metallic-vapour discharge lamp has within an undivided envelope 1 a number of parts 4, 5, 6, 7 of electrodes between which closely adjacent or intersecting arcs pass and to prevent arcing between the wrong pairs of electrodes a separate supply circuit is provided for each discharge path. In the form shown, a unity ratio transformer TR separates the electrodes 4, 5 from the source PS supplying the other pair 6, 7. Alternatively, each are may be fed from one phase of a multi-phase supply.
