Abstract

In the manufacture of hardened rails, a steel containing 0,5-1,5 per cent of silicon is rolled out into rails and the rail head is hardened in flowing water with subsequent tempering by the internal heat of the rails. In an example the steel contains 0,3-0,4 per cent of carbon, 0,7-0,9 of manganese and 0,7-0,8 of silicon. One or more alloying elements such as chromium, molybdenum, titanium or vanadium may be added to the steel, singly up to 0,5 per cent, the total amount not exceeding 2 per cent.
