Abstract
Fabrics are rendered crease-resistant by impregnating with a water-soluble precondensate of the urea-formaldehyde type together with an oxidizing agent, quickly heating to 95-100 DEG C. whilst still damp and hardened by heating to 110-150 DEG C. The oxidizing agent, e.g. hydrogen peroxide at or near boiling point oxidizes some aldehyde to produce acid, which acts as a catalyst. Other materials may be added to the impregnation bath, e.g. lubricants, sizes, filling or stiffening agents, plasticizers or other finishing agents. In an example, urea is dissolved in boiling formaldehyde, the solution neutralized with ammonia and stirred into cold water; hydrogen peroxide solution is added and an artificial silk velvet immersed therein, squeezed, passed over heated cylinders, dried and heated for 2-3 mins. at 110-150 DEG C.
