479,876. Type-bar-making machines. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY, Ltd., SCOTT, R. H., and BILLINGTON, M. E., [Representative of BILLINGTON, J. E.]. Aug. 14, 1936, No. 22431. [Class 100 (iii)] Assembling matrices.-A hand-stick for the hand composition of matrices, which are to be subsequently transferred to the assembler, has an extended member movably or rernovably secured thereto to form a support for spacebauds. The stick comprises a base a, Figs. 1 and 2, having on its underside a rack c, which is engaged by a spring-pressed pawl f on a sliding carriage d carrying a matrix-supporting wall e. A slide h, movable in a slot in the base, carries the other matrix-supporting wall k. The slide carries a hand-grip m, and a fixed hand-grip l extends from the base. A spring o urges the grips together, and the sliding wall k towards the adjustable wall c. The walls may be separated by a finger-operated cam p. The spaceband support consists of a T-shaped member r, fitting into a slot in the base and frictionally held by a leaf spring. In a modification, the spaceband support is in the form of a U-shaped rail t, Fig. 4, pivotally mounted on the base a, and held by a detent either in operative position parallel with the base, or in inoperative position at right-angles thereto.
