Abstract

431,589. Recording-apparatus; echosounding apparatus. McGEACHY, J. A., and WOOD, A. B., Admiralty Research Laboratory, Teddington, Middlesex, and DRYSDALE, C. V., Admiralty, London. Feb. 20, 1934, No. 5572. [Class 106 (iv)] [See also Group XXXVIII] In a recorder in which the marking member is reciprocated across the record surface, the marking member is mounted on a carriage which moves along two parallel screws and has a device engaging each screw alternately, the change of engagement being made at the end of each half cycle of reciprocation, one screw thus driving the carriage in one direction and the other in the opposite direction. The screws may be of the same hand and rotating in opposite directions, or of opposite hands and rotating in the same direction. The invention may be used in echo-sounding apparatus. The carriage 2 supports the marker 1 which is moved electromagnetically to press a tape 13 on to the record surface. The carriage 2 has a slidable pin 5 which engages one screw 3 when the carriage is moving in one direction and the other screw 4 when moving in the opposite direction. The change of engagement is caused by the end of the screw thread pushing the pin through the carriage. The carriage may close contacts 6A, 6B when moving from left to right but not when moving in the opposite direction, since the foot 6E which is engaged by the carriage is pivoted. The contacts may be placed in any one of several holes in the bar 8, and may be turned round so that they are closed by the carriage in the opposite direction of travel. In an electrochemical recorder, the marker 1, Fig. 5, is removed from the record during the return of the carriage, this being effected by the rocking of a lever 16 by a fixed abutment. The lever is held in its two positions by a spring 17 and stops 19, 20. Specification 375,375, [Group XXXVIII], is referred to.
