Abstract

479,792. Preventing unauthorized use of motor vehicles. FLORIDON, H. F., and HOFMAN, J. C..Tan. 22, 1937, No. 1975. [Class 79 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] To prevent unauthorized manipulation, the detent-releasing plunger 10 in the handle of a hand-brake lever 1 on a motor vehicle is adapted to be secured by a rotary barrel lock 14 which also controls the ignition circuit. The inner barrel of the lock is formed with an extension 16 terminating in a transversely elongated head 17 to which the detent operating rod 2 is connected by a ball- and-socket joint 18, the rod and plunger being normally pressed upwards by a spring 13. In this position, the head 17 is situated above a disc 20 secured in the handle and formed with a slot 19 which prevents depression of the plunger when the head 17 is transverse to the slot. When turned into alignment with the slot by rotation of the key 21, the plunger can be depressed to release the detent, the ignition circuit being, at the same time, closed by engagement of the side of the extension 16 with a terminal 23 attached to the underside of the plunger. The lever 1, mounted on a fixed pivot 3, operates front and rear brakes simultaneously through rods connected to pins 8, 9, on a plate 7 suspended on a pin 25 on the lever, the lever, when rocked to apply the brakes, being held by engagement of the detent 4 with teeth 6 on the lower edge of the plate.
