Abstract

498,958. Locking vehicle wheels. TALENT, V. March 16, 1938, No. 8077. Convention date, March 31, 1937. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Groups XXXI and XXXV] To lock a motor vehicle against unauthorized or inadvertent starting, a normally spring - retracted slidable detent 4 is moved into engagement with a cogged disc 1 or the like on the propeller shaft C, being held in both operative and inoperative positions bya transverse spring- pressed bolt 12 releasable only by depressing the clutch pedal P, whilst the actuating means 19 for shifting the detent 4 after such release, is interrelated with the ignition switch so that the ignition key 10 cannot be turned or removed until the detent has been set to lock the propeller shaft and, vice versa, the detent cannot be withdrawn while the ignition switch is open. The detent slides in a guide casing 3 on the gearbox E, a pin 8 thereon projecting through a slot 3f in the casing. Thrust is imparted to the detent by means of a rod 7 sliding in supports 5, 6 on the base plate 2 and casing 3 respectively, a compression spring 10 normally retracting the rod 7 and a spring 11 connecting the pin 8 to the support 6 to hold it in contact with the end of the rod. The bolt 12, engageable with recesses 4a in the side of the detent, is connected by a Bowden cable 13 to the clutch pedal P. The rod 7 is operated through a lever 15 and linkage 16 when a slidable rod 19 carried on the steering pillar A is pulled upwards the upper end of the rod 19 passing through the ignition switch box 17 and terminating in a handle 19b. Within the switch box, a lever 20 with a projecting handle is pressed by a spring 21 against the rod 19 and, when the rod is raised engages an annular groove 19a therein to hold the locking means in engagement. The ignition switch, located under the, lever 20, comprises a spindle 22 extending from a rotary barrel lock 18a and carrying an arm 23 adapted to engage terminals 24. On the spindle is also a collar 25 with a flattened portion which, when the lever 20 is out of engagement with the groove 19a, bears against its underside, preventing opening of the switch. When the lever is in engagement with the groove and the switch is opened, the collar 25 comes behind the lever, preventing retraction thereof to release the operating rod 19 until the switch is again closed. When, after closing the switch, the lever 20 is pulled back, it is withdrawn past its normal position until it engages an abutment 17a on the casing, whereby a lug 20b on its underside momentarily closes contacts 26 in the circuit of the engine starting motor. The lever 20 may be held out of action, as when using the device for turning on a hill, by means of a rotatable spring pressed plunger 27, normally held out of engagement by a cam head 28 riding on an inclined abutment 32.
