Abstract
1,271,229. Change-speed control. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO. Ltd. 9 Oct., 1969 [6 Nov., 1968], No. 52634/68. Addition to 1,144,743. Heading F2D. A pneumatically operated vehicle gear change mechanism of the type disclosed in the parent Specification, includes a locking plunger 39 which is automatically pneumatically inwardly moved when top (i.e. 5th) gear is engaged to prevent movement of the gear shift lever 13, via an integral peg 54 on a selector plate 55, from the top (5th) gear to a gear lower than the next (i.e. 4th) gear until movement of the lever 13 into the 4th gear channel of the gate, or the door operating channel (D), outwardly releases the plunger to permit gear lever movement into the lower channels (3, 2 or 1) of the gate. Additional or alternative locking plungers may be provided for controlling movement of the shift lever between the other gear selecting positions in the gate as required. An additional channel (S) in the gate is the "start" position, movement of the lever 13 into which causes the gear selector plate 55 to close a micro-switch 67 connected across the starter motor for engine starting. The gear selector plate 55 is formed as a segment with a cam notched periphery engaged by a ball 52 spring and/or pneumatically loaded against the notched cam surface which is formed such that varying effort is required to move the shift lever 13 to various gear positions, the effort required depending on the position to be selected.
