Abstract

902,487. Change-speed control. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Aug. 7, 1959 [Aug. 27, 1958], No. 27084/59. Class 80 (2). A vehicle change-speed gear is controlled by a set of electric press-buttons M, VR (normal forward drive), E (low speed), N (neutral), R (reverse) and P (parking), each, with the exception of N, having a contact-establishing rod 12 engageable in a vertical column of balls 14, 15 loaded by springs 17, 17<SP>1</SP> and being held when depressed by the engagement of a cam notch 9 with one of a series of lugs projecting from a vertical locking-bar 1 loaded by a spring. The N button is designed to permit operation of only certain of the remaining buttons at any one time, and for this purpose is provided with a plunger 10 formed with longitudinally-spaced upper and lower recesses 11, 11<SP>1</SP>. With button N in its normal position, Fig. 5, the upper surface of plunger 10 locks the balls 14 against spring 17<SP>1</SP>, thus preventing operation of any of the buttons E, R, P, but recess 11<SP>1</SP> permits operation of either of buttons M, VR. When button N is depressed, however, the balls 15 are locked by the lower surface of plunger 10, and recess 11 permits operation of any one, but not more, of buttons E, R, P. The lift of the cam notches for buttons M, VR is greater than that of the notches for buttons E, R, P (Fig. 5) so that any one of the latter buttons, if depressed, may be released from locking-bar 1 by the operation of either of buttons M, VR, independently of button N, but operation of any of buttons E, R, P will not displace the bar 1 sufficiently to release any of buttons M, VR, N, if depressed.
