Abstract

451,256. Locking brake - levers. GEMMILL, D. T., 'Nellan, Drumchapel Road, Bearsden, Dumbartonshire. Feb. 6, 1935, No. 3815. [Class 79 (iii)] [See also Group XXXIV] A locking device for a hand brake-lever is adapted to be released by a magnet controlled by a switch on the hand-lever in conjunction with another switch which may be the ignition switch of the vehicle, the object being to prevent unauthorized release of the brake. The device shown in Fig. 5 comprises a magnet 15 mounted on the brake hand lever 10 and an armature plate 25 carrying a pawl 13 slidable in guides 24 on the lever and adapted to engage a rack 14 secured to a frame member of the vehicle. The plate is further guided by spring-pressed pins 27 thereon extending into the cores of the magnet. A cover plate 29 secured to the lever prevents access to the armature 25. In Fig. 1, the pawl and magnet are arranged above the rack. The circuit of the magnet shown in Fig. 1 includes leads d, f, a push-button switch 16 on the hand lever and the switch 17 which is also that for the engine ignition circuit b, c and may be closed only by a special key. Thus the pawl 13 may be disengaged to release the brake by closing the switch 16 only when the switch 17 also has been closed. In addition to the ignition switch an additional key-operated switch may be provided whereby the brake may be released by persons such as garage workers who are not, however, authorized to start the engine. The lever may be provided with a positive locking device for preventing movement in both directions instead of with the ratchet-and-pawl device.
