Retaining devices for controlling apparatus. - The accelerator pedal, when released by the driver, is locked in closed position by a latch which is automatically projected to engage the pedal but can be retracted by the driver when he wishes to depress the pedal again to open the throttle. In the construction shown, a sliding pedal or plunger 12 is formed with a shoulder 13 which is engaged, when the pedal is in the top or " shut " position shown, bv a notch 10 on one arm of a spring-controlled bell-crank lever 9, the other arm 14 of the lever being actuated through a crank 16, shaft 17, and pedal 20 by the driver when he wishes to release the accelerator pedal. When the accelerator pedal has been depressed the enlarged part of its stem above the shoulder 13 slides past the notch 10. A modification is described in which the accelerator pedal is of the oscillating type.
