Abstract

231,645. Waller, J. E., Rodway, E. D., and Switchgear & Cowans, Ltd. March 5, 1924. Guarding against unauthorized use. -The bonnet is locked and unlocked by electrically-operated means concurrently with the ignition system of the engine being rendered ineffective and effective. The bonnet 11, Fig. 4, is provided with a catch-plate 14 with which engages a bolt 13 operated by the core 12 of the locking and unloeking solenoids 8, 9. A key-operated switch 17, Fig. 1, energizes one or the other of the solenoids 8, 9 by means of the switch contact 24, the energizing current being supplied from the battery 19. Adjustment of the switch also by means of the contact 23 cuts off or supplies current to the low-tension circuit of the ignition induction coil 22. When ignition is by means of a magneto 25, an additional switch contact 28 earths the primary magneto circuit, thus cutting out the ignition when the bonnet is locked. As soon as the bonnet locking bolt has been operated a trip or change over switch 21 automatically breaks the circuit of the operating solenoid and closes the circuit of the other solenoid in readiness for the reverse adjustment of the switch and the reverse movement of the locking bolt. This change-over switch may consist of a spring contact 29 on an extension of the locking bolt 12 adapted to engage contacts 30, 30<a> in the circuit of the locking solenoid 8 or contacts 31, 31<a> in the circuit of the unlocking solenoid 9. A single solenoid with means for reversing the current may be employed. The solenoids may be replaced by electromagnets. The change-over switch may consist, as shown in Fig. 6, of a pivoted arm 33 carrying a relatively movable contact 32 adapted to engage the pair of contacts 31, 31<a> in one solenoid circuit or the pair of contacts 30, 30a in the other circuit, the arm being operated by the locking bolt, and a snap action being given by means of a spring 34.
