479,391. Variable-speed friction gearing. PRYM, H., PRYM, R., and PRYM, A. Feb. 2, 1937, No. 3050. Convention date, Feb. 19, 1936. [Classes 80 (i) and 80 (ii)] In a continuouslvvariable friction gear, the friction member 2 drives the shaft 6 through a driven cone 3 and toothed gear-wheels 13, 4, 7, the centres of which are connected by links 12, 14 arranged at an acute angle. As shown, the friction cone 2 is splined on the driving shaft 2a and mounted in a sleeve 16, which is formed with a rack 16a engaging a pinion 17, which may be rotated by a hand wheel 42, so as to move the cone 2 axially to vary the speed ratio. The torque reaction between the toothed gearwheels has the effect of increasing the frictional pressure between the cones 2, 3.
