476,093. Exhaust - gas directing- devices. SCHMIDT'SCHE HEISSDAMPFGES. March 22, 1937, Nos. 8425 and 8426. Convention dates, March 20, 1936 and July 17, 1936. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Groups XII and XXVIII] Exhaust from a steam or internal-combustion engine emerges near the narrowest part of a slit 6, 14 through which passes the draught created by the movement of the vehicle. The upper streamlined guide vane 5 is mounted, preferably on pivots 8, in side plates 7. In steam engines, Fig. 1, it is mounted behind the exhaust opening, the space above the funnel 3 being either unobstructed, or a damper 9 may be opened to permit direct access to the atmosphere while the vehicle is stationary. In internal-combustion engines, Fig. 4, the exhaust pipe 12 may open within the guide 10, the gases passing through slits 15 and mingling with the airstream behind the narrow passage 14. A pipe 18 may put the interior of the upper guide 17 into communication with the space within the lower guide 10. These exhaustdirecting devices may be mounted above or below the vehicle.
