[Class 40 (v)] In order to reduce the height of the aerial structure used at an aerodrome to produce a " guiding- line " of overlapping beams, the usual halfwave dipole and reflectors are replaced by quarterwave elements which are mounted over an " earth " of good conductivity, such as a sheet-metal or wire-netting counterpoise. As shown in the Figure, the main aerial 1a is associated with a single " twin " 2a, which is switched at 7 to act alternately as a reflector or absorber, so as to swing the beam. Further to reduce the height, each is loaded at 1b and 2b as shown. The feed-line 6 and tuning condensers 8, 9 may-be located below the counterpoise 3. The single element 2a may be replaced by two reflectors set on opposite sides of the main aerial 1a Specification 442,193 is referred to.
