[Class 40 (v)] The degree of " directivity " of a short-wave beam is controlled either by moving the radiators relatively to associated reflectors, or by varying the number of radiators in operation. This result is secured, as shown in Fig. 1, by moving one or more dipoles D1 . . . D3 towards or away from the focal-line of a parabolic reflector R, or by switching one or more of them into or out of circuit. The fir-tree aerial-array shown in Fig. 3, is controlled by means of switches S1, S2, which cut out one or more of the dipole-elements 1 . . . 8, when '' searching " for a distant transmitter. When the switches are closed the directive response is at its maximum. The control switches S, S1 may be ganged with other switches, which adjust the impedance of the feed-line accordingly.
