[Class 40 (v)] In order to sharpen the critical point, particularly in a direction - finder used on an aeroplane for two - dimensional working, the characteristic field diagram A of any known type of directional aerial is made to rotate constantly about an axis OY slightly inclined to the major axis OX of the curve. This operation can be effected by mechanically rotating a reflector associated with the aerial at O, or by cyclically varying suitable couplings in the receiving circuit. The direction of the transmitter then lies in the line along which the received signal remains at constant strength.
