Abstract

468,380. Water-tube steam boilers. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Jan. 2, 1936, No. 135. Convention date,'Jan. 2, 1935. [Classes 123 (ii) and 123 (iii)] A water-tube boiler comprising front and rear upper drums connected by tube banks to a mid drum, with the bottom of the rear drum as high as the maximum water level in the front drum, has circulator tubes connecting the drums only above the normal water level in the front drum, and the rear drum has a steam separator between the circulator connections and a steam outlet together with a feedwater inlet so arranged as to deliver the water into washing contact with the incoming steam. A boiler having an intermediate drum 16 and tube bank 21 has the bottom of the rear drum 17 at least as high as the maximum water level in drum 16 which is connected to drum 17 solely by steam circulators 28. The rear tube bank consists of a single tube row 22 behind which an upflow economizer 30 is positioned in a downward gas pass 31. A separator 40 similar to that described in Specification 433,270 has drain pipes extending into corresponding tubes 22 so as to be continuously water-sealed, and nozzles which provide a sheet of feedwater across the separator inlets. Superheater elements 25 arranged within the front tube bank pass through lanes formed between the tubes of the two rearmost rows of the bank 20 by bending their upper ends in two directions so as to enter the drum 15 with double the longitudinal spacing of the other tubes of the bank. A modification comprises a pair of three-drum boiler units on opposite sides of a water-cooled furnace, the water-wall sections of one pair of opposite sides being connected to one only of the boilers which has a multi-loop superheater in substitution for most of the tubes of the front bank and arranged on opposite sides of a gas baffle 62. Each coil of the rear section comprises two tubes leading to a Y-fitting 80 from which a single tube 81 extends to form the front return-bend section.
