465,670. Water tube steam boilers. INTERNATIONAL COMBUSTION, Ltd., and DAVIS, R. F. Nov. 29, 1935, No. 33166. [Class 123 (ii)] Water - tube steam boilers comprise on opposite sides of the furnace banks 1, 2, 3 of upriser tubes connected to lower headers 5, 6, 7, the banks on each side being spaced successively further from the combustion zone and all the downcomers 12 leading to the various banks being located so that all the upriser banks are disposed between the combustion zone and the downcomers. Longitudinal baffles 9 in a common steam and water drum 8 enclose a space 11 into which all the upriser tubes enter, the downcomers opening into a relatively steam-free outer space and entering a lower surface of the lower headers. External downcomers 13 opening to the ends of drum 8 and the headers may also be provided, and tubes 14 opening to a header 15 connected with an external downcomer 16 may form front and rear walls. A feed tube running the length of the drum may have nozzles directed towards the downcomer mouths and suitably proportioning the flow in the various tubes. The furnace gases may be baffled so as to avoid the downcomers or heat them only slightly.
