[Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] The inductance of a choke is varied by inserting in a gap in its core a magnetic or a non-magnetic material. As shown in Fig. 2, the half 9 of the disc 8 is of magnetic material, such as iron, and the other half 10 is of non- magnetic material such as aluminium. As the join in the disc is turned into the gap the inductance of the choke rises suddenly. The rate of rise of inductance can be varied by tapering the join between the two materials as shown in Fig. 3a by varying the width of the poles 7 as shown in Fig. 3b or by having a gradual transition between the two materials by a mixture of iron powder and aluminium powder combined by an adhesive.
