[Class 65 (i)] [Also in Group XIII In apparatus for operating the doors of coke-ovens and the like, the doors are provided with latching means operated by mechanical means carried on the door-extracting mechanism ; the latches may also be operated by mechanical means, which may be connected with the door-lifting means, all these devices being controlled from a single position. In the form shown, the door 5 carries swinging latch-bars 3, 4 which engage hooks 6 on the door-frame. The latch-bars 3, 4 are tightened by screws 8 having cross-arms 17 which are engaged by forks 18 carried on the doorextracting head 14, the forks being rotated, to operate the screws 8, by gearing from handwheels 34; the forks 18 are slidable in the head 14 against the action of springs, to allow yielding if they are not in position for embracing the arms 17 when the head 14 is brought up to the door. The door is lifted by an arm 12 pivoted on the head 14 and operated by a screw and gears from a hand-wheel 52, and this arm 12 is connected by a link 56 to a pivoted finger 53 which engages and operates the upper latch-bar 3, the lower latch-bar 4 being connected to the upper one by a link 57 for simultaneous operation. In a modification, the hand-gearing at 52 is replaced by an electric motor, acting through gears and screw on an extension of link 56 and controlled from the same position as the movement of the whole machine, and the hand wheels 34 are placed close to the same position, operating through extension shafts and gearing. The latchoperating finger may be formed on the link 56, the member 53 then being replaced by a simple link.
