Retort and like doors.-A door F for a vertical retort B is mounted on a shaft 9 having keyed to it a counterweight lever 11 connected by a link 12 with a lever 13 on a second shaft carrying an operating-handle 15, the pivotal points of the link being arranged to lie in dead-centre positions when the door is fully opened and closed. The door is detachably secured to bolts' 4 by plates 5 engaging grooves 6 in the bolts, and the bolts are loosely mounted in arms 8 keyed to the shaft 9. The lever arm 11 carries a counterweight 10 and the lever 13 is mounted on a sleeve 14 carrying the operating handle 15 and rotatable on a shaft 22 carried by a bracket 16 on the supporting post E. To close the door the handle 15 is moved in the direction of the arrow 20, the parts moving from the dotted to the full-line position. In the closed position the link 12 and lever 13 are at dead centre, the pivotal points being in a vertical line above the shaft 22, while in the open position the pivotal points lie vertically above the shafts 9, 22. Slotted catch members 17 mounted on a shaft 18 are operated by a hand lever 19 when the door is closed to engage with the ends of the arms 8, and the door is finally tightened against its seating 2 by screwing the bolts 4 through collars 7 bearing against the arms 8. A stop 21 limits the movement of the handle 15, and the shaft 22 projects beyond the sleeve 14 to limit the movement of the link 12.
