Abstract

462,161. Strapping packages &c. BAYER, J. Oct. 14, 1936, No. 27882. [Class 45] A device for straining and securing bale ties around packages comprises a frame 13 having a rigid handle 14 with a straining wheel 4 rotatable about pivots 1 attached to an eccentric 3 operable by a crank 1a. A crimping lever 8 is pivoted at 1 so that it may be moved to fit against the handle 14 as shown in Fig. 1, and form with it a handgrip for the operation of the straining lever 15. The straining lever 15 is formed with a foot 10 for resting on large parcels and is pivoted at 11 to the frame 13 and fitted with a pawl 9 engaging with a ratchet 5 connected to the straining wheel. The crimping lever 8 may also be fitted with a pawl 6 and both levers may participate in the straining operation, or the lever 15 may be locked by a pin 12 and the straining effected by the lever 8 alone. A lip 7 at the base of the frame 13 is inserted between the package and the overlapping ends of the band. In a modified construction, Fig. 5, the straining lever 15 rocks on the pivot 1 and turns the wheel 5 in an opposite or anticlockwise direction. The sleeve portion of the tie is rigidly attached to one of the overlapping portions and the other portion is introduced between the lip and the straining wheel for engagement with the latter. The lip 7 terminates in a point 7a and the frame 13 is formed with a nose piece for abutting against the sleeve 16.
