Abstract
459,417. Strapping bales &c. GRAVES, W. L., 10, Boxgrove Avenue, Guildford, Surrey.-(Signode Steel Strapping Co. ; 2600, North Western Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A.) Feb. 27, 1936, No. 5926. [Class 45] Flexible metallic binders such as metal bands or straps are tensioned around bales &c. by a tool comprising a shank 14 with a knurled slotted head 10 rigid therewith. A tubular handle 13 may be secured to a reduced end 15 of the shank. In use, the strap is pulled hand tight about the package so that the portion 22 overlaps the initial portion 21 of the strap, the portion 22 being inserted in the slot 12 in the head of the straining tool. The handle 13 may lie along the package, the head being so dimensioned relatively to the handle that a part of the head extends below the top corner of the package, or the head may have an additional slot so that in the initial position the tool handle extends vertically. Rotation of the tool is stated to feed the overlapping portion of the strap in opposite directions to tension the strap. Jointing members may be applied to the overlapped portions before or after tensioning, and secured when the band is fully tensioned. The tool may be held by a bar 25, Fig. 7, having an adjustable abutment 28 which bears against a flat surface on the package. This support is stated to be useful when the upper part of the package has no definite corners.
