Abstract
408,686. Baling. SIGNODE STEEL STRAPPING CO., 2600, North Western Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A. Oct. 15, 1932, No. 28842. Convention date, Feb. 5. [Class 94 (i).] The overlapping ends 10, 11 of a binder strap, which may be encircled by a sleeve 12, are secured by deforming the edges to provide complementary obliquely related upstanding marginal flanges 32 and compactly rolled longitudinal ribs 28. The joint may be formed by a tool such as is described in Specification 394,098, [Group XXII]. The flanges are, as seen from below in Fig. 5, obliquely related to each other and to the general line of tension. In addition, a curved hump 34 may be formed to co-operate with each lateral deformation. Each flange, rib, and hump is substantially longitudinally co-extensive. During the formation of the joint, the parts are held at 33 and 35 with a relieved pressure to allow a slightly gradual curvature at these points, but not sufficiently relieved to allow the deformations to vary substantially in length. The sleeve 12 may be dispensed with.
