[Class 146 (ii)] [See also Group XVII] A metallic sleeve s for uniting the overlapping ends of bale bands is formed with internal projections to engage the bands. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a separate element 1 is welded to the inner surface, and in a modification, Fig. 5, corrugations 2 are formed to produce raised surfaces on the inner surface. In use, the overlapping ends 3, 4 of the band are placed within the sleeve, which is deformed at q, ql, Fig. 10, by any suitable tool. Several separate elements may be welded to the sleeve, or more than one area or the whole area may be corrugated.
