Seals and sealing.-Bale ties are formed of a length of knurled hoop-iron, Fig. 1, the ends of which are secured together by a fastener, Fig. 2, fitted over the joint and deformed by lateral spreading as shown at n in Fig. 4. The deformation is carried out in a device comprising a baseplate P and a block B sliding between side plates having openings 0 into which the material of the fastener and ends is pressed by blades l. The underside of the block B is shaped to conform to that of the fastener so that the spreading takes place only at the openings O. In a modification, a fastener which constitutes a partial sleeve is employed. Various forms of cross-sections a - - e, may be used for the bands.
