Abstract

662,624. Strap strainers. SIGNODE STEEL STRAPPING CO. Dec. 7, 1949 [Dec. 22, 1948], No. 31450/49. Class 45 A tool for tensioning bands around a: package has a main frame A with a foot 10 for resting on the package on which the ends of the band encircling the package lie in overlapping relation, an elongated finger grip 13 extending rearwardly of the foot, a shaft 35 mounted on the main frame,A for rocking movement towards and away from the foot and which carries a feed wheel 39 which is rotated for tensioning through a ratchet wheel 40 by a pawl 50 carried by a handle C which may be oscillated about the shaft 35, means 55, 56 preventing reverse rotation of the ratchet and feed wheels and a camming surface 75 formed on the forward top edge of the finger grip 13, the tensioning handle C being so positioned that it may be brought against the camming surface 75 and by further squeezing towards the finger grip used to rock the shaft 35 relative to the foot 10 to separate the feed wheel 39 therefrom. The shaft 35 which carries the feed and ratchet wheels 39, 40 is rotatably mounted in a frame B which in turn is pivoted on to the main frame A by a pin 27. The frame 13 is biassed by a spring 28 so that the feed wheel 39 is urged towards the foot 10. The handle C is also pivotally carried by the shaft 35 so that the feed wheel 39 may be raised from the foot 10 by the camming action of the handle against the surface 75 on the hand grip 13 when desired. The means for preventing reverse rotation of the feed wheel comprises two spring-loaded pawls 55, 56 the tops of which engage the ratchet wheel 40 half a tooth apart so that it is held every half tooth movement. The tensioning handle C is provided with two projections 65, 66 to hold those pawls away from the ratchet wheel when the handle is in a lowered position and the driving pawl 50 may be disengaged from the ratchet wheel by an integral extension 53. The teeth on the feed wheel 39 extend diagonally across its circumferential face and these exert an inward thrust on the band and hold it in contact with guide pins 70 (not shown), and 71. The feed wheel co-operates with a serrated plug 14 in the foot 10 which grips the lower end of the band. The plug surface slopes inwardly so that if the foot is sprung by heavy pressure it becomes increasingly nearer parallel with the feed wheel's serrated surface. A second foot 11 having a guide pin 72 is provided at the rear of the finger grip 13 over which the band may be passed if desired.
