956,946. Strapping bales &c. FMC CORPORATION. Sept. 21, 1962 [Dec. 28, 1961], No. 36045/62. Heading F2G. A strap-tensioning tool has a gripper 16 to hold the end of a flexible strap, means 29 to engage another portion of the strap to draw it around a package when a pivoted lever 32 is operated through its normal range and a cutter 40 rockable in a strap guide 38 to cut the strap when the lever 32 is oscillated beyond its normal range. The gripper 16 is pressed by its spring 19 against the bottom plate 13 of the tool and can be raised to engage or free the strap by pressing on a pivoted thumb-piece 25 which is accessible by the hand holding the tool handle 11. The strap-engaging windlass 29 has slots 30 to engage the strap and rotates with a ratchet wheel 31 on a transverse shaft journalled between two parallel walls 27 upstanding from the bottom plate 13. The lever 32 is pivoted for oscillation about the same transverse shaft and carries a pawl 35 which engages the ratchet wheel 31 to rotate it. A second pawl 37 on the tool body prevents retrograde rotation. When the lever 32 is oscillated beyond its normal range a projection 46 on its bottom end contacts a projection 45 on the transverse collar 41 on which a semicircular cutter 40 is mounted. This tilts the cutter in the slot 39 of the guide 38, as shown in Fig. 2, and severs the strap.
