Abstract
1,033,526. Package binding mechanisms. AUTOMATIC STRAPPING MACHINES Ltd. Dec. 11, 1964 [Oct. 26, 1963], No. 42318/63. Heading F2G. A package binding mechanism comprises tensioning means, means for sealing overlapping portions of a loop passing around the package by closing a seal over the overlapping portions severing means and a device responsive to the severing means to release the tension on the loop just before the loop is cut. As shown the tensioning device comprises a gripper 16 which holds the free end of the loop, and a slotted capstan operated by a handle 21 and ratchet wheel 20. The sealing means is housed in a housing 13 pivoted to the base-plate of the mechanism and is of a conventional laminatedhead type. Adjacent the housing 13 is the severing means comprising a pivoted knife 23 and shear plate 24, the knife being operated by a pin 30 extending from the housing 13. The knife has a rearwardly projecting finger 25 engaging an arm 26 on one end of a shaft 27, the other end of which carries a cam 28 situated above a stop pawl engaging the ratchet wheel. On operating the handles 29 to apply a metal seal around the tensioned lugs the pin 30 slides in a slot in housing 13 and depresses the knife which acts to rotate shaft 27 to release the stop pawl from the ratchet wheel and hence the tension in the loop. The arrangement of the parts is such that the tension in the loop is released just before the knife cuts the loop.
