Abstract
930,212. Package-strapping tools. AUTOMATIC STRAPPING MACHINES Ltd., and P. P. PAYNE & SONS Ltd. Nov. 13, 1961 [Dec. 6, 1960; March 27, 1961], Nos. 41949/60 and 11022/61. Class 45. A tool for banding packages comprises a base 10 providing a jointing station at which overlapping tape portions 12a, 12b are secured by means of a sealing device, in combination with means 13 for holding the under of said overlapping tape portions extending across the station and so that the tape, looped around a package, extends across the station as the upper of the tape portions, and means 14 on the far side of the station for severing this upper tape portion, the sealing device being movable into and out of operative position in the jointing station and the severing means being effectively actuated only when the sealing device is in the operative position, by and together with the sealing device when the actuation of the latter has proceeded sufficiently to hold the upper tape portion. As shown, the toll has a U-shaped base, and the sealing device, which is mounted on pivots 11a to swing forwardly and downwardly into operative position, is of the kind providing an anvil 11b and opposed inwardly closing jaws 11c, 11d for flattening a sealing sleeve blank and the overlapping tape portions 12a, 12b. The jaws are opened and closed by handles 11e through a linkage including a reciprocable pivot pin 11f guided by slots 11g inside plate 11h; the slots become vertically disposed when the device is in operation. The handles may be replaced by a power device for reciprocating the pin and thereby actuating the jaws. The holding means 13 consists of a sunk clamping face 13a in the base and a gripper jaw 13c eccentrically mounted on a pivot and adapted to be swung by a handle 13e towards the face 13a to grip the lower tape portion 12a. The severing means comprises a projecting tongue 14a separating the upper and lower portions of the tape and a blade 14b pivoted at 14c to the base and normally held raised by a spring 14d, the blade being adapted to be pressed in severing engagement with the edge of the anvil to cut only the upper tape portion. Depression of the blade is effected when the sealing device is in the operative position by a roller follower 14e on the pin 11f. For tensioning the upper tape portion 12b to tighten the loop of tape prior to severing, there is provided a boss 15a with a dimetrical slot 15b for edgewise reception of the tape, the boss being rotatable unidirectionally by a handle 15c under control of a ratchet 15d to cause the tape to wrap itself around the boss. The locking means of the sealing device consists of a holding plate 16a secured to the back of the rear jaw 11d and providing projections 16b laterally of the jaw for engagement beneath inverted shoulders 16c in the sides of the base as the jaw closes forwardly with the sealing device in position. In a modification, mounting plates upstanding from the base 10 have vertical slots therein open at the top to receive the ends of the pin 11f of the actuating linkage of the sealing device.
