Class 146(2) [Also in Group 1] A machine for tensioning flat strip bale ties is characterized in that the tensioning means are operated by an air-motor which stalls when a pre-determined tension is reached. The apparatus comprises a base-plate I with a gripper 2 for anchoring an end Sl of the tie, and two further grippers 11 and 12 which operate on the other end of the tie. The gripper 11 consists of a lever 11 b pivoted at 11a and which has a lower jaw 11c which co-operates with an upper jaw 1 Informed on a separate block also pivoted at 11a. A compression spring lie acting between the two parts of the gripper urges the upper jaw to the closed position. A lever 11f allows the gripper to be opened manually. The gripper is oscillated about the pivot 11a by a cam 13 which runs in an anti-clockwise direction as seen in Fig. 2 and which is driven by an air-turbine, through a reduction gear. The gripper 12 consists of an upper jaw 12b formed on a lever which pivots at 12a and co-operates with a fixed lower jaw 4. A compression spring 12c moves the upper jaw to the closed position. As the gripper 11 is rocked in the direction of tensioning, i.e. clockwise in Fig. 2 the gripper 12 automatically opens and as the gripper 11 returns due to the spring 13b, the gripper 12 closes under the influence of the spring 12c and the gripper 11 opens and passes freely over the tie. The machine also incorporates jointing dies 3 and 5 and a cutting blade 7. Specifications 578,854 and 782,536 are referred to.
