409,168. Strapping bales &c. SIGNODE STEEL STRAPPING CO., 2600, North Western Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Porter, H. C. ; La Grange Park, Illinois, U.S.A.) July 14, 1933, No. 19966. Convention date, July 14, 1932. [Class 45.] A gripper for a metal strap being tensioned, particularly in a package binding machine, comprises a stationary anvil 6 and a wedgeshaped gripper block 8 which is slidably mounted on a block 11 which may be raised and lowered as by an eccentric operated by a hand-lever 22. The lower face of the block 8 is serrated and its upper or inclined edge is provided with keys which engage keyways in the block 11. An adjustable spring is housed within bores in the blocks 8 and 11. Movement of the block 11 otherwise than vertically is prevented by guide blocks 25, 26. By rotating the lever 22 clockwise into the position shown the block 8 is moved into initial engagement with the strap resting on the anvil ; as the tension is applied to the strap the block 8 automatically slides relatively to the block 11 and is drawn into yet closer engagement with the strap by the tension thereon.
