[Class 45] A tensioning tool for a flexible binder comprises a gripper movable to an open position to receive and to release the binder, and to a closed position to anchor an end of the binder, and tensioning-mechanism for pulling on the other end of the binder and operable relatively to open the gripper. The tensioning device, which may be similar to that described in U.S.A. Specification 1,912,045, comprises a slotted windlass 12, Fig. 5, upon a shaft 16, Fig. 4, adapted to be rotated by the oscillation of a handle 13 having a spring- pressed pawl 14 acting upon a ratchet 15. A pawl 17 . prevents retrogression while the handle is being moved clockwise. Each pawl is associated with a pivoted control lever 18, 19 with camshaped projections 21, 22 arranged so that, when the handle 13 is moved to an extreme position as shown in Fig. 5, the projections co-act to withdraw both pawls to release the windlass for free rotation. The gripping device for the other end of the band is similar to that described in Specification 409,168 and comprises a wedge-shaped block 25 housed in a mounting block 26 on an eccentric 28. The eccentric shaft 29 is operated by a lever 30 biassed in an anticlockwise direction by a spring 35 surrounding a plunger rod 36 passing through a pivoted guide 38. In use, one end of the band is placed in the slotted windlass and the other beneath the gripping block 25. The handle 13 is oscillated until the desired tension is reached, and is then pressed down into the position shown in Fig. 5 after a joint has been made. The parts 21, 22 co-act to release the windlass, and a lug 47, projecting from the handle, engages a surface 46 on an extension 45 of the lever 30, rotates the eccentric 28 in a clockwise direction and lifts the gripping block 25 into an open position. The lug passes into a recess 48, which has a latching effect to detachably hold the parts in the position shown, in which position the whole device may be disengaged from the band. The lever 30 may be rotated further by means of its extension 45 so that the pivot 37 passes a dead centre and the gripper is thus retained open independently of the handle 13.
